Gabrielle is proud to serve on the board of directors for the Milne Stevens Johnson Syndrome Society, a non-profit organization based in Victoria, BC, Canada.
Our mission is to help 14 year old Ian Milne to preserve his vision, by facilitating ongoing access to state of the art medical treatment in the United States. This will involve a stringent adherence to treatment schedules and recommended protocols, including bi-annual travel to specialists in both Boston and Miami, at an approximate cost of $40,000 per year. We strive to build awareness and provide information or support to Stevens Johnson Syndrome patients and their families. In the long term our goal is to assist more SJS patients with funding for medical expenses.
Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a potentially fatal adverse reaction to medications resulting in severe blistering of the skin and mucus membranes. Patients must be treated in advanced burn care centres around the country. In rare cases the syndrome can be caused by infection or cancer.
For sjs survivors, the permanent damage to the eyes and supportive ocular tissue is the most medically challenging complication. Severe dry eye, scarring of the cornea and numerous other ocular surface diseases are common.
